I grew up, the oldest of three sisters, on a farm in North Dakota. The small community upbringing allowed me to participate in a variety of school and community activities, which helped me to develop a well-rounded background while honing my leadership abilities. I loved school and had a passion for music. My yearning to always learn more led to the realization, by age 14, that I wanted to be a music teacher.
After graduating as Valedictorian from high school in 1978, I attended Mayville State University where I graduated summa cum laude in 1981 with a triple Bachelor of Science Degree in Instrumental Music, Vocal Music and Psychology.
After graduation, I served as K-12 music director for the Edinburg School District.
Instruction included K-6 elementary music, beginner, middle & high school bands & choirs, jazz band, swing choir and solo & ensemble competitions. This career path lead me away from music and into the business world in Denver, Colorado, followed by a move to Dallas and Plano, Texas. Realizing how much I missed working with children and teaching music, I again started teaching private piano lessons on weekends.
Upon “retirement” from the business world, teaching private music lessons became a very welcome and fulfilling, yet unexpected career of a lifetime. Through referrals, student enrollment built over the years to 60+ and eventually became a full-time career. I love my students and what I do! I get great satisfaction and enjoyment from not just teaching music and life lessons, but in creating a love and understanding of music within my students. In my heart, I truly know I have found my true calling in life; to inspire, mentor and be a positive role model to children through music.
Outside of teaching music, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and puppies, Katie Leigh & Leighton. I also love travel, personal health and fitness and cooking.
